Panayiotis Procopiou

Panayiotis was born in Cyprus and at the age of 17 years old he came to England for his tertiary education. He obtained his BSc (1St Class Hons.) in Pure Chemistry in 1976 at Imperial College London, and his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1980 at Imperial College under the supervision of the 1969 Nobel Prize Laurate Sir Derek Barton. He began his research career in the pharmaceutical industry in 1979. He worked on a variety of diverse projects such as Pulmonary Fibrosis, Asthma, Cardiovascular, Cancer, CNS and Antibacterials. He identified 15 compounds that progressed to development and is a co-inventor of the beta2-agonist Vilanterol, which is a constituent of three marketed drugs (Relvar, Anoro Ellipta and Trelegy Ellipta). He collaborated with eight British Universities: Bristol (1990-3, 2001-03), Exeter (1991-94), Imperial College London (1994-2014), Cambridge (1999-2003), Oxford (2005-14), University College London (2009-11), Sheffield (2011-15), Strathclyde (2012-16). He supervised 32 PhD students and 18 Post-doctoral Associates, published 142 scientific papers and is an inventor on 37 patents. His h-index is 45. He retired in 2018, and currently is a visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London (2019-present).
He was one of the first students to enrol at the School of Byzantine Music in London (1989) and graduated in 1996 with the Diploma of Chanter. He attended the chanter stands at St Andrews in Kentish Town (1989-91) and St Panteleimon in Harrow (1991-93). He was appointed as Lambadarios at St Panteleimon’s Church in 1993 and as Protopsaltis in 2019. He established a branch of the School of Byzantine Music in Harrow (1994-present).
