Fr Joseph Paliouras

Fr. Joseph-Panagiotis Paliouras was born in Trikala, Thessaly, Greece, in 1961. He began his musical studies at a young age and graduated in Athens, obtaining Diplomas in Byzantine and European Music.
He holds a Degree in Theology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and from the Higher Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Reading.
In 1986, he moved to London, where he has lived ever since.
He was a member of the Greek Educational Mission in Great Britain and worked as a Secondary School Teacher of Music (PE16) and Religious Education (PE01) at the Greek Secondary School and Lyceum of London for 25 consecutive years, from 1990 to 2015.
In 1986, he founded the School of Byzantine Music of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain in London, where he has served ever since as Director and Choir Conductor. This year, the School celebrates 40 years of educational service and contribution to the Greek Orthodox community and to Byzantine music in Great Britain. During its forty years of activity, the School has organised and participated in hundreds of concerts and cultural events throughout Great Britain and has consistently taken part in major community-wide events and commemorations.
He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on Christmas Eve in 1988 and currently serves at the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.
Since 1989, he has presented the weekly radio programme “From the Hymnology of Our Church” on London Greek Radio (LGR). He also presented the weekly educational programme “A Window to the Blue” and has been a contributor to the weekly programme “The Voice of the Church.”
Since 1991, he has also presented two weekly programmes on Hellenic TV in London: “Tomorrow Is Sunday,” a programme of theological interest, and “Embrace Education,” an educational programme.
He has released more than 30 CDs containing religious hymns and songs, including: “Christmas Hymns,” “The Services of the Bridegroom,” “The Holy Passion,” “Double Celebration,” “Christmas and New Year Songs,” “The Land of the Uncontainable,” “The Flowers of the Aegean,” “The Time of Repentance,” and, most recently, “The Twelve Days Carols.”
More recently, he created an independent online course for learning Byzantine Music under the name “Βυζαντινός Ψαλμωδός – Byzantine Psalmist.”
